We said yes to both of them. A month later, her former foster mother called and asked me a single question that changed everything: \u201cThey still haven\u2019t told you why they chose you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>

My husband and I had tried for five years to have a child before we finally stopped hoping that I would get pregnant.<\/span><\/p>

All these little things made it seem as if he increasingly belonged here.<\/span><\/p>

Only his bedroom still looked as if he could leave at any time.<\/span><\/p>

Jace stopped addressing Daniel and me in an overly formal manner.<\/span><\/p>

Jace stared at the table.<\/span><\/p>
