I had spent months preparing my six-year-old daughter, Emma, for her very first airplane ride.<\/p>

It wasn\u2019t just a matter of packing a suitcase.<\/p>

I packed her favorite snacks, noise-canceling headphones, coloring books, her beloved stuffed airplane, and a tiny suitcase covered with cloud stickers.<\/p>

She hugged Buzz, her stuffed airplane, against her chest and smiled.<\/p>

For a moment, everything felt perfect.<\/p>

We boarded a few minutes later.<\/p>

I held Emma\u2019s hand as we walked down the aisle toward row 7.<\/p>

Then I stopped.<\/p>

A woman who appeared to be in her late forties was comfortably settled in the seat, with her handbag tucked beneath the seat in front of her.<\/p>

I looked at her.<\/p>

There was no mistake.<\/p>

\u201cExcuse me,\u201d I said politely. \u201cI think this is my daughter\u2019s seat.\u201d<\/p>

The woman looked at me.<\/p>

Then she looked at Emma.<\/p>

\u201cI paid for this window seat,\u201d she replied.<\/p>

\u201cSo did you, apparently.\u201d<\/p>

My stomach dropped.<\/p>

\ud83d\ude1f The Seat Had Been Assigned Twice<\/h2>

Before I could say anything else, a flight attendant named Lisa approached.<\/p>

I handed her our boarding passes.<\/p>

She checked them carefully and then looked at the woman\u2019s information.<\/p>

After a moment, Lisa explained what had happened.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m very sorry. There was an aircraft change this morning, and a seat was assigned incorrectly.\u201d<\/p>

The woman had originally been assigned to another seat but had been moved to 7A during the reassignment.<\/p>

Lisa looked toward Emma.<\/p>

\u201cThis little girl was booked into 7A months ago.\u201d<\/p>

I lowered my voice.<\/p>

\u201cMy daughter has autism,\u201d I explained. \u201cThe window helps her stay calm. It\u2019s her first flight.\u201d<\/p>

Lisa nodded.<\/p>

Then she turned toward the woman.<\/p>

The woman shook her head.<\/p>
