The moment she was diagnosed, Bates described her reaction: \u201cI went berserk. I left the examining room, still with my drains in, clutching a pillow, thinking, \u2018What am I doing?\u2019 It was a hot July day, and I was still healing. That fear and uncertainty was overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her initial reaction was one of bitterness and sadness. \u201cI thought my career was over, everything done,\u201d she admitted.
