She blinked like I\u2019d just slapped her. \u201cWhat? What are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n

I held up the note. My hand was shaking so hard the paper rustled. \u201cSuzie left this. She\u2019s gone, Mom. She said to ask you why.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t play dumb. She left the hospital without telling me. Left me with our newborns and this cryptic message. What did you say to her? What did you do<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n

She stood there in silence, casserole dish still in her hands like it weighed a hundred pounds. Then she quietly walked to the kitchen and placed it down on the counter, her back to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just\u2026 I warned her,\u201d she said finally, her voice low. \u201cI told her not to make the same mistake your father<\/em> and I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does that even mean?\u201d I stepped toward her, desperate for clarity. \u201cWhat mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n

She turned to face me. Her eyes were misty. \u201cLoving someone who doesn\u2019t love you back the same way. Someone who sees love as a burden instead of a bond.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s your<\/em> trauma, not mine!\u201d I shot back, more harshly than I meant. \u201cSuzie and I\u2026 we weren\u2019t perfect, but we were good. At least I thought we were.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe told me things,\u201d my mom said, her voice cracking. \u201cWhen you weren\u2019t around. How overwhelmed she was. How she felt trapped. How scared she was to become a mom when she still didn\u2019t know who she was as a woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t she tell me that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause she was trying to be everything you wanted. And I told her she didn\u2019t have to do that.
