As a parent, you look forward to certain milestones, and the mother-son dinner at my twelve-year-old\u2019s school was one of them. I cleared my schedule, picked out a nice outfit, and imagined a fun, memorable evening together. So, when my son quietly mentioned that his step-mom would be going instead, I was deeply hurt. Confused but determined, I decided to show up anyway, hoping he would be happy to see me. Instead, he barely made eye contact throughout the entire event. I drove home feeling rejected and wondering where I had gone wrong.<\/p>\n

The truth came out later that night in a phone call with my ex-husband. I could hear our son crying in the background. It turned out there had been a simple but profound misunderstanding. My son hadn\u2019t chosen someone else over me. He had worried that I was too busy with work and didn\u2019t want to be a burden. His step-mom, meaning well, had offered to go as a backup, and in his young mind, that translated into him believing I didn\u2019t want to come.
